Love Is Not Proud
On the night before he died, Jesus gathered with his disciples for a meal. As the meal was being served, Jesus did something strange. He got up, grabbed a towel and a basin of water and with His own hands He washed and dried the feet of each of his disciples.
In those days people didn’t have sidewalks and streets of concrete. They would walk the dusty roads in sandals and their feet would become dirty. It wasn’t commanded by Mosaic Law, but it was natural and even necessary for people of Jesus’ day to have their feet washed when they entered a home.
So, it wasn’t so strange that the disciples were getting their feet washed; it’s whose hands were doing the washing? The King of kings and Lord of lords, the One who has no equal on earth, was down on his knees serving in love, love that was not too proud to wash his disciple’s feet. 12 men, 24 feet, 120 toes and every last one humbly washed in love.
Our world talks so much about love, but knows so little about it... Love that only thinks about my needs, my wants, my comfort, my convenience, my desires, is not love. That’s pride or arrogance or selfishness, but it’s definitely not love.
Jesus holds the whole world in his hands, yet he was not too proud to get on his knees and wash the feet of his friends. He’s perfectly holy yet he was not too proud to get on a cross and wash away the sins of the world, including yours. That’s real love. You’re good with God because Jesus’s love was not proud.
Ponder Jesus great love to you and think of the multitude of ways you can set aside your pride and love those around you— your spouse, your children, your teachers, your neighbors, your co-workers…everyone.
