Drop The Anchors!

Drop The Anchors!

“On the fourteenth night we were still being driven across the Adriatic Sea, when about midnight the sailors sensed they were approaching land. They took soundings and found that the water was a hundred and twenty feet deep. A short time later they took soundings again and found it was ninety feet deep. Fearing that we would be dashed against the rocks, they dropped four anchors from the stern and prayed for daylight. -Acts 27:27-29

In 60 AD, the apostle Paul and his companions were caught in a desperate situation as they sailed to Rome.  I’m no sailor but it seems like good nautical practice to me.  If you’re trapped in a storm at sea and it’s pushing you toward the rocks, drop the anchors and pray for daylight.

It’s also good practice for you.  Life on this planet is like being caught in a storm.  The currents of national upheaval can make us panic. The winds of change can blow so hard our vision is blurred.  Groundswells of guilt crash against our conscience.  Waves of worry sweep over our mind. Swells of sadness flood our heart.  Often, they collide all at once and we fear that we will be dashed against the rocks.

What’s good for the sailor is good for you.  God’s protection will steady you in the midst of change and panic.  Forgiveness in Jesus will hold you fast when guilt crashes your conscience. God’s peace will secure you when worry sweeps over your mind.  The certain hope of a glorious future will anchor you when sadness floods your heart. God’s anchors of protection, forgiveness, peace, and hope will keep you firm through the fiercest storm until daylight comes and the storm passes.

When the storm is fierce, drop the anchors and pray for daylight.

Spoiler alert…Paul and his companions survived the storm and so will you!
