I guess you could say her heart was broken. When our daughter, Libby, was 5 we discovered her heart had an electrical problem. I will spare you the details, but one night we almost lost her. She needed a pacemaker. My wife and I didn’t sleep a wink in the days leading up to the surgery. Multiple times a night, one of us could be found standing next to her bed making sure she was breathing. There was tremendous relief when the surgery was over, and the pacemaker was functioning. I’ll be honest…I didn't quite understand how it worked but it did. Soon we could sleep through the night again. Her heart was safe.
The heart has long been considered the seat of emotions. Wouldn’t it be nice if we could place something in our emotional heart to keep it from malfunctioning? Can you imagine a heart that wouldn’t feel overwhelmed with guilt or stress about life? A heart that would be able to keep things in perspective and hold a positive outlook? That’s exactly how God wants your heart to function and he’s given you something to make that happen. It’s not a pacemaker. It’s a peace-maker named Jesus.
Long before the world was created, long before your heart began to beat, God was engineering the perfect remedy for your malfunctioning heart. He delivered it in a manger, displayed it on the cross, and installed it in your heart—Peace with God through Jesus. What guilt can harm your heart when you’ve been washed in the blood of the Lamb? What stress of life can overwhelm you when the God who controls all things is on your side? Eternal peace with God keeps life’s trials in perspective and gives a positive outlook on your future.
You have peace with God through Jesus. You may not fully understand how it works but it does. You can sleep through the night. Your heart is safe. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. – Philippians 4:7
